What is the Difference Between a Breast Augmentation
and a Breast Lift?
Which is best for me?

“This is a question that patients ask me all the time. Here is the answer that I usually give. I hope you find it informative.” – Dr. Steely

Breast Augmentation - Before Photo 2 Breast Augmentation - After Photo 2
A breast augmentation will only increase the volume of your breasts. A breast implant cannot move your breasts closer together and it will not lift droopy breasts. It will not change the position of your nipples.  After an augmentation, your breast will be fuller and firmer with more projection, but the nipples will remain in the same position.

A breast lift, on the other hand, will raise the position of the nipple as well as the breast tissue. In this procedure, the excess skin is removed, or tightened and reshaped, giving the breast a higher, firmer, and perkier contour.  Depending upon the amount of breast tissue you have, you may or may not need an implant with your breast lift procedure.

Breast Augmentation or Mammaplasty

Women with good skin elasticity, whose breasts do not sag, but who wish to have larger breasts will benefit the most from breast augmentation.

Breast implants can increase the volume, and improve the shape and firmness of your breasts, as well as sharpening cleavage. However,
  • Sagging breasts will not be lifted
  • Stretch marks will not be removed, but may be less noticeable

Breasts which have stretched or lost their elasticity may droop more after breast augmentation.

Breast Lift or Mastopexy

Women who are happy with the amount of breast tissue they already have, but desire higher, firmer breasts, will benefit most from a breast lift.

A breast lift will:
  • Correct sagging breasts
  • Reposition the breasts to a more desirable location
  • Remove excess skin
  • Bring breast tissue which has spread out, back together

The result is firmer, more attractive breasts which often appear somewhat larger. But a breast lift will not add volume or fullness. Firmness will depend partly on the amount of existing breast tissue.

Many times, a breast augmentation is combined with a breast lift procedure.  This gives both increased volume as well as a higher, perkier breast mound. (See Breast Lifts with Implants and Without Implants.)
